Tell me if this sounds familiar, a two-man crew of the charter boat S. S. Minnow and five passengers on a "three-hour tour" from Honolulu run into a tropical storm and are shipwrecked on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean – ironically enough, the island is close enough to Hawaii to clearly pick up Hawaiian AM radio transmissions on a portable receiver.
If you guessed the old CBS TV show, that ran from September 26, 1964, to September 4, 1967, Gilligan’s Island – you’re right on target. The big screen treatment of Gilligan's Island with a current cast would be an interesting reflection of the old TV hit.
Originally cast with Bob Denver as First Mate Gilligan, I could see Jim Carrey as the bumbling, naive, accident-prone crewman (affectionately known as "Little Buddy" by "The Skipper") of the S.S. Minnow. Given his previous roles in Ace Ventura: pet Detective, The mask and Dumb and Dumber, Carrey is the embodiment of comedic humor and would bring Gilligan’s character to an energetic new level of incompetence. Michael Cera is Currently in the lead at Fill The Part.
Alan Hale, Jr. played a fantastic Captain/The Skipper Jonas Grumby, but I would look to cast John Goodman as the infamous Skipper. Best known for his role as Dan Conner on the television series Roseanne and for providing the voice of Scully in Monsters, Inc., Goodman provides the perfect combination of the full-bodied captain and a stern personality, with the comedic aspect of a loyal friend to the bumbling idiot Gilligan.
My cast would also include Pierce Brosnan as Thurston Howell III, known as the millionaire (originally played by Jim Backus) and Goldie Hawn as Eunice "Lovey" Wentworth Howell, Thurston's wife (originally played by Natalie Schafer). While it’s not the role of agent 007, with Brosnan’s debonaire style and clean-cut look, I think he’d have no issue playing the part of the money-soaked millionaire. And given Hawn’s early performance as Joanna Stayton, a hoity-toity rich girl, in the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard, she’d be a perfect fit as the millionaire’s wife.
The movie star, Ginger Grant is a harder decision. With Ginger’s love of evening gowns and hairstyles coupled with her perfectly groomed hair and Marilyn Monroe-like qualities, I think the essence of Ginger is really Paris Hilton, but she’s not my first choice. Originally played by Tina Louise, I would look to Jennifer Aniston as a frontrunner for the role as the bathing beauty. However, Fill The Part fans have Christina Hendricks in the lead for this role.
I have to disagree with the Fill The Part leader, Jeff Goldbum, to star as the Professor. For me, I would like to see Richard Dreyfuss in this role. To me, Dreyfuss looks like the patient professor and would suit the neutral and level-headed character well - serving as the leader of the castaways whom the others respected because of his great store of knowledge.
My last castaway would be Sandra Bullock to play the beautiful Mary Ann Summers, even though Alyson Hannigan is the frontrunner at Fill The Part. Considering her role as Gracie Hart in the 2000 film Miss Congeniality and the fact that she is an amazing actress who could play any part, Bullock is the perfect fit to play the ingénue typical girl-next-door, and loyal friend to glamorous Hollywood star Ginger.
But my question is who would be in your cast of castaways incompetently trying to get off the island?
